The World of NFT Art

What the hell is NFT art?

You may be hearing a lot about NFT’s of late. In tandem with Crypto currency’s massive rise, the NFT has found its place among the cyber stock market. But what the hell is an NFT?

This is a question I asked myself, which lead me to spend a few weeks of online research and learning. Now of course, nothing is stopping anyone from just right click and saving an image to their desktop, however, this is where NFT’s come into their own. NFT stands for ‘Non Fungible Token’. A non-fungible token (NFT) is a unit of data stored on a digital ledger, or otherwise called a blockchain. It certifies a specific digital asset to be unique and therefore not interchangeable, making them unique. I could see the potential of this genre.

NFT art piqued my interest from the get go. Unlike crypro currencies, which I do dabble in but was late to the game, I wanted to be on top of the NFT buzz from the get go. From looking at some of the art that contributed to the deluge of creative contributions I was hit with 2 very distinct things:

  1. A lot of the art was terrible, childish and pointless.
  2. About 1/3 of the art I saw was incredible and genuine pieces from artists both established and new.

I wondered where I would fit into all this, and also what I could offer that would be a worthwhile contribution. I didn’t want to compete with the likes of the crypropunks which are absolutely raking the money in (for what is basically pixel art). Foremost, I wanted to sell my art and ideas genuinely. Not en masse. I wanted to have collections of my work for sale and also ideas and concepts.

Gas Fees

One thing that I will point out for people who wish to get int selling Crypto Art – be very aware that it can cost to start selling on the Ethereum blockchain. Cost is amounted in Gas Fees. A gas fee is computational data that you have to pay a minder in order to get your art onto the Ethereum blockchain. If you don’t have enough funds or tip the right amount, you will run out of gas, your cash will be gone and your artwork wont be minted. Trust me, I learned this the hard way! Here’s a link to a handy video that explains it all very clearly. In the meantime, I am currently selling all my art through the Polygon blockchain as there are no gas fees. Albeit, there are downsides from selling here rather than the Eth network, but I plan on moving across as soon as I gain more capital to fund the gas fees.

NFT Trading Cards

Personally, I loved the idea of a trading card collection from the outset. I already had a solid idea for a graphic novel story called “Dead by 13” which I had fleshed out characters and a world that I was quite happy with. I thought why not bring this world to NFT? Having the characters as Top Trump style trading cards really appealed to me. When I was younger, I was always a fan of Top Trumps. So here I am, I have got my foot on the ladder of NFT through the Opensea platform. My goal? Just to continue creating decent artwork that I can be proud of on the platform. Who knows, I could be a billionaire this time next year!
