My Top 5 Illustration Tips

Here are my top 5 illustration tips for anyone starting out in their career. When I start any illustration, I try and keep these 5 points at the back of my mind where possible.

1. Start with a sketch

Before you start working on your final illustration, make a rough sketch of your idea to help you plan out the composition and overall look of your piece. This will help you visualise the end result a lot easier.

2. Use references

Use references to help you capture the correct proportions and perspectives, use references such as images, models or live objects. Don’t be afraid, however, to also let your imagination run wild at times.

3. Experiment with different tools and materials

Don’t be afraid to try new tools and materials, such as pens, watercolors, or digital software, to find the best approach for your illustration. Focusing on the one style of medium may get too repetitive over time.

4. Pay attention to lighting and shading

These elements can greatly impact the overall mood and atmosphere of your illustration. Study how light falls on objects and experiment with different shading techniques to bring your illustration to life.

5. Keep it simple

Keep it simple: Sometimes, less is more. Simplifying your composition and focusing on the essentials can make your illustration more effective and impactful.
